Itinerary

Day 1

Leave Cusco early in the morning by bus, around mid-day visit the tombs of Ninamarca, known as the chullpas, then continue to Paucartambo a picturesque Spanish colonial town and then to the acjanacu pass, which marks the beginning of the cultural zone of Manu biosphere reserve, this habitat is ideal for epiphytic plants such as bromeliads, ferns, one of the oldest living plants, mosses and lichens. At least 50% of the plant species found here are endemic to this region located at 8.000 feet.

Overnight at Orquideas lodge.

Day 2

Early wake up to observe the Peruvian bird called cock of the rock (rupicola peruviana),the male birds have a reddish orange colour ,several dozens come together for an exhibition of a mating ritual dance.

After breakfast continue down the narrow road between waterfalls and canyons toward the village called Pilcopata (*1) and then to Atalaya port, here we board our covered outboard motor boat and head down the Alto Madre de Dios river for approximately 15 minutes toward Erika lodge a comfortable rustic lodge where we will hike through the ingenious trail system.

Overnight at the lodge.

(*1) free option in Pilcopata town, make the final settings for a 1 ½ river rafting (class 1 and II) trip down the kosñipata river where you will enjoy the spectacular view of the koñeq canyon.

Day 3

The Erika lodge is located in a transition zone between high and low jungle ;due to this altitude is possible to observe a different diversity of wild life.

After breakfast we will start walking near the river banks, during the hike you will see many varieties of insects, medicinal plants and reptiles.

In the afternoon you will board our boat and after five minutes you will walk through a nice trail to observe the flora of the area such as delicate plants, heliconias ,fruit plantations and orchids.

Continue to Machu wasi lake where with the help of a telescope you will observe great egrets tucanets, carpenters keskadees.

Short night walk to see American bullfrogs, horned frogs and an incredible variety of insects. (*2)

(*2) Free option: Canopy zip down At Erika lodge; our guest traverse from tree to tree and platform to platform using pulleys on horizontal traverse cables zip lines, as the sail through the tree tops of the tropical rain forest canopy and over the trails far bellow. Expert guides assist you in this exciting journey through the different layers of the rain forest and explain what is going on around you from the time you leave the ground, until you rappel back down to the forest floor.

Day 4

Early wake up to board our boat for only five minutes down river to a Parrot clay lick called qollpa on the river banks, where many species of parrots such as the blue headed parrot and the white –eye parakeet can be seen.

In the afternoon drive back to the Hotel in Cusco.

  • Insect repellent (at least 50 % DEET)

  • Flashlight, enough batteries (alkaline) and bulbs
  • Towels, swimming suit
  • Personal medicines and /or supplies (liquid for contact lenses for example)
  • One day pack and one back pack or duffel bag of luggage; one bottle of water for the first day and plastics bags.
